Now in its 13^th edition, the Brazil Justice Yearbook reflects on the past two decades of the Brazilian judiciary, marking the anniversary of its original Portuguese publication, the Anuário da Justiça Brasil. The present architecture of Brazil’s legal system was shaped by the 1988 Federal Constitution, which restored the nation's democratic framework following two decades of military rule.

When the Anuário was first launched in 2007, this institutional framework had reached its legal age of majority. Following an era of rapid expansion, it was entering a stage of maturity, consolidating its defining historical mission.

Brazil’s judiciary consists of approximately 16,000 judges serving a territory nearly the size of Europe or the United States. As of May 2026, some 76 million cases were moving through the system — potentially involving 152 million litigants, assuming an average of two parties per case.

With one of the world’s most extensive constitutions, nearly every aspect of life in Brazil is subject to judicial review. The country has 92 courts. The largest branches of this judicial tree are the civil, criminal, and labor justice systems.

The structure consists of trial courts; appellate courts, which reexamine cases on appeal; the third level of review, which is limited to procedural and legal issues; and, where constitutional matters are involved, the Supreme Court (STF).

The Brazil Justice Yearbook examines issues affecting the Brazilian justice system as a whole, with particular emphasis on the Supreme Court (STF) and the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), the Superior Labor Court (TST), the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the Superior Military Court (STM).
